Sun Yuan was born in Beijing, 1972. Peng Yu was born in 1974 in Jiamusi. Both studied oil painting at Central Academy of Fine Arts. They rose in popularity in the 1990s as independent artists. In 2000 they formed a partnership, using Yuan’s artistic skills and Yu’s technological interests. They used their art to challenge political constructs like democracy, freedom and an ever- evolving technology.
Sun Yuan & Peng Yu have held solo exhibitions at Tang Contemporary Art, Beijing (2009); Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (2012); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2012–13); and Gare Saint Sauveur, Lille, France (2013).
